âSo, we have good news and bad news,â I said when we returned to the table.
âBad news first!â Alex demanded.
I was about to reply when Chelsea cut me off. âThereâs no bad news. Ianâs flight isnât lost. His connection in Atlanta was diverted because the storms in the Northeast grounded too many flights and there wasnât room for his plane to land. The last update was that his flight was sent to Washington-Dulles.â
âWas that the bad news or the good news?â Grant asked.
âItâs all good news,â Chelsea repeated. âHis flightâs not lost.â
âTrue,â I replied. âBut the bad news is if that info is correct, Ian was supposed to have landed in Washington-Dulles already.â
âAnd we still havenât heard from him,â Nicole added.
I put my arm around her for solidarity. âWe will, Nic.â
âBut if heâs safe, why hasnât he called?â she squeaked.
âMaybe his phone battery died,â Chelsea offered.
I knew she was trying to help, and she truly had by calling her dad, but Nicole wasnât thinking rationally right now. She wouldnât be satisfied with anything less than speaking to Ian.
Thankfully, the rest of our friends jumped in offering a million more reasons why Ian might not have called. It probably didnât ease her worry, but it was a good distraction, if nothing else.
âHe could still be stuck on the runway,â Grant suggest.
âUgh, thatâs the worst,â Alex said. âRemember when that happened to us last year?â
Archer chimed in. âYeah and they never let you turn your phones on until youâre deboarding. Ianâs probably just sitting there on the tarmac dying to text you.â
âBut of course he wonât because Ian never breaks the rules,â Marissa teased.
âYeah, except to secretly date my little sister behind my back,â I joked.
That had everyone laughing and soon our conversation turned into a pretty fun roast of my best friend.
Despite my own worries, even I couldnât help smiling as I retold some of my favorite Ian stories from our high school days. And even though Nicoleâs face was still tinged with worry, I could see she was in good hands, as Marissa warmly rubbed her shoulder.
I was truly grateful that weâd made such incredible friends at Northwood. Theyâd become our own little extended family. And nothing meant more to me than family.
âYouâre really worried, arenât you?â Chelsea asked, startling me from my distracted musings as my friends continued their conversation.
âAbout Nic? Nah, sheâs tougher than she looks.â
âI can see that. I was talking about your friend.â
âOh. Ian can take care of himself.â I huffed a laugh. âIn case you couldnât tell from the stories, heâs the kind of guy to survive a plane crash and hike all the way back here through a blizzard like itâs no big deal.â
âAh, so heâs the unassuming hero-type,â she teased. âI can see why your sister fell for him.â
âMe too,â I joked back.
Chelseaâs smile made my chest hurt, but strangely, it wasnât that familiar ache from earlier, when Iâd been dying to return her flirtations with some of my own. It was something else, something foreign and disarming, but a little bit comforting, too.
